SCPHOTO is an eLearning resource for schools, home school or independent adult students wanting to expand their skills in photography following a solid, professional curriculum. SCPHOTO is a "project based" or hands on style of learning  where students  study and explore written and video lessons, assignments, quizzes and discussion forums in a curriculum that builds the foundational skills every professional photographer needs in their work. All courses are designed to fit a classroom or school curriculum time schedule that begins in August and ends in June BUT all courses may be started at ANY time and completed on any schedule that works for you. This curriculum was developed over a period of 28 years in the high school classroom of Instructor, Keith Wills. The class was the foundation for the school yearbook and journalism programs and had a career focus rather than a strictly art focus as many photo programs do. The original course carried Visual Arts as well as Applied Arts credits at the school. ALL courses follow California State VPA (Visual Arts) Standards and meets most school requirements for course work in photography. SCPHOTO is the ONLY online photography course designed to meet school requirements for content and participation.

The two key elements of subject and treatment are emphasized in all courses. Projects in the class will help photographers train their eye to "see" a photo that is a step above the ordinary snapshots that are taken with cell phones today. Projects challenge students to solve problems that build reasoning and critical thinking skills. This classroom site is powered by "Moodle 2.5" which offers students and teachers some powerful on-line options for independent study.Check the FAQ link below for more details about the courses and online options. Watch the short video on the header above to listen to the creator and teacher of SCPHOTO explain how this course can help you. VISITORS / GUESTS: To view the courses with limited participation login using the user name "visitor" and the password "visitor" and you will have limited access to all courses to preview them before you enroll as an independent study student or as a school group.

Basic Photography eTextbook

Complete Curriculum or Classroom Resource
logoThis eTextbook contains the content from both the Basic and Intermediate courses offered here at SCPHOTO. The eText is intended for use in a classroom setting where students will use the material as either a resource or a curriculum map for their study under the direction of their teacher. Lessons, assignments and suggested class discussions and tests are all available but without the same interactivity of the other two online courses. The difference is in how students submit work for assessment. In this class the option to upload images and to generate a course grade has been removed so that that function can take place in the classroom with the teacher.

The content of this class follows the general principles of photography taught by instructor Keith Wills for 28 years at Santa Cruz High School.

NOTE: This eTextbook is NOT intended for use by students enrolled in either the Basic or Intermediate courses on this site. The content in the eText is identical to the content in these courses without the interactivity.  Note also that this is a digital or online resource and not an actual "textbook". eText saves paper and is updated frequently which a real textbook can not.

$25 for single copy and $10 to 15 per student copy for school year license for a group of 4 or more. All content is available for one school year only. Email keith@scphoto.com if you wish to do a longer term to set a price for that.

Personal Pro Training

911 TowerThis is an "enrichment" class that is designed for any age student to teach them the foundational principles of photography. Curriculum follows the time proven steps used by Instructor Keith Wills for 30 years in his high school  and adult ed classroom. Learn about the difference between a simple snapshot and a real photograph -- dig into the two key elements of a photo which are subject and treatment -- take on challenging photo projects and then submit them for comments and evaluation by the pro. This is like your own personal PRO taking you through the key elements of great photography.

This class is great for all ages 12 to 100. The class does not fit the typical school requirements so is not recommended for students needing credits.
